Nature Tots ~ March 15th

Nature Tots is a program is open for 2 -4 year olds. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Nature tots is usually held on the second Wednesday of the month at the Storm Lake Public Library at 10:30 AM. Each month is a different nature themed topic and will include: story time, a snack, and an activity. Nature Tots is free of charge. 

 

Egg Hunt in the Park

 

Saturday, April 8th is the Annual Egg Hunt in the Park at Buena Vista County Park. Join the conservation staff to learn about animals that lay eggs and meet some of the education animals. After the program the egg hunt will begin! The eggs contain goodies and other prizes! The program and egg hunt will take place in the South Shelter area at Buena Vista County Conservation Park, 377 440th St Peterson, IA 51047, starting at 2:00 PM. Bring your own basket, sack, whatever you would like to collect your eggs. We will start at 2:00 PM and go until all the eggs are found. The program is open to all ages but the egg hunt is limited to children ages 0 -12. This program is free of charge but reservations are required. Please RSVP to the conservation office by Wednesday, April 5th at 4:00 PM by calling 712-295-7985. 

 

Nature Tots ~ April 12th ~ Rabbits

Nature Tots is a program is open for 2 -4 year olds. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Nature tots is usually held on the second Wednesday of the month at the Storm Lake Public Library at 10:30 AM. Annual BV County Conservation Fishing Derby ~ June 3rd

If you are between the ages of 6 -15 and enjoy fishing come on out to Gustafson Lake – Gabrielson Park on Saturday, June 3rd for the annual Buena Vista County Conservation fishing derby. There will be two age divisions: 6 -10 year olds and 11 -15 year olds. First and second place prizes will be awarded for both age divisions for the heaviest single fish and for the heaviest stringer of three fish caught that day. The fishing contest will begin at 9:00 A.M. and run till 11:00 A.M.  Please be there before 9:00 to sign in. Participants ages 6 -10 must be accompanied by an adult. RSVP’s are required by Friday, June 2nd at 4:00 PM. To register call the conservation office at 712-295 -7985.

Naturalist Lunch Box is designed for all ages. The naturalist will present a short program on a selected topic and have hands on activities for younger audience members.

On Friday, June 16th at 12:00 PM will be the first Naturalist Lunchbox program of the year. The topic for this week is owls.  Luna the education barred owl will be in attendance to introduce you to the wonderful world of owls! South Cove Park is located along the south shore of Storm Lake at 125 Stoney Point Road, Storm Lake. If you plan on attending, please let Katie know by Wednesday, July 14th by calling 712-295-7985.  Polliwog Camp: Ages 4 -6 years

Polliwog Camp will be held at Gabrielson Park/Gustafson Lake. Day camp fee is $5 per student; this fee helps to cover cost of camp supplies. Ten students will be allowed per camp. To register, please contact the conservation office at 712 -295 – 7985. When registering please let us know which camp and time you would like to sign up, also include any allergies or medications we should be aware of. After registering we will either mail or email you a registration form that needs to be filled out and sent back to us along with your registration fee before camp begins. You only need to choose one day of camp.

(Gabrielson Park/Gustafson Lake)

A fun filled morning or afternoon at the lake! We will go fishing, use nets to discover creatures that live in the lake, go on a hunt for turtles, frogs, tadpoles and much more!

Astronomy Night ~ June 24th

Buena Vista County Conservation and Sanford Museum have teamed up to present a night under the moon and stars! The night will begin with identifying and learning the constellations followed by using telescopes to find the moon and planets. Refreshments will be provided.The program begins at 9:30 PM on Saturday, June 24th. Meet at the South Shelter Area of BV County Park. Feel free to bring blankets and lawn chairs to relax in while viewing the night sky. The Astronomy Night program does require a reservation. Spend a morning or afternoon learning about our feather friends! We will make bird feeders to use at home, meet our education owl Luna and red-tailed hawk Odin, and decorate bluebird houses to hang on the trail at BV County Park!

Snakes of Iowa

The Buena Vista County Conservation Board is hosting an afternoon program on Snakes of Iowa. Snakes are an important part of the ecosystem. Iowa is home to 27 different species. Come to learn all about snake anatomy, diet, habitat and more. Several live snakes will make an appearance!

The Snakes of Iowa program will be held on Saturday, July 22nd at 2:00 in the South Shelter Area.  Each program will offer refreshments.  If you plan on attending, please let Katie know by Friday, July 21st by calling 712-295-7985. This program can be cancelled due to lack of participants.

Pollinators

Pollinators are a diverse group and play an important role in the ecosystem as well as our own lives. Come out to Gabrielson Park to learn all about the many different pollinator species and how to attract them to your yard! We will discuss types of pollinators and the plants they enjoy.  

The Pollinators program will be held on Thursday, July 27th at 7:00 PM at the Gabrielson Park Shelter. Gabrielson Park is located south Sioux Rapids on Highway 71.  Each program will offer refreshments.  If you plan on attending, please let Katie know by Wednesday, July 26th  by calling 712-295-7985. Birds in the Afternoon

The Buena Vista County Conservation Board is hosting a new program call Birds in the Afternoon. Birds in the Afternoon will feature a different bird species each program. This program is designed for all ages. The month of August’s topic will be the ruby throated hummingbird.  Learn tips to attract this bird to your yard including how to make your own nectar and plants for containers and beds.

On Friday, August 11th at 2:00 PM, a program on hummingbirds will be offered at the Buena Vista County Conservation Office.  Each program will offer coffee, lemonade, and an assortment of baked goods.  If you plan on attending, please let Katie know by Wednesday, August 9th by calling 712-295-7985. Monarch Tagging

Join the naturalist to get up close and personal with monarch butterflies. Everyone will get an opportunity to tag a monarch. Tagging monarchs is part of an ongoing research project with the University of Kansas to track migrating monarchs. We will also discuss the decline of monarch butterflies and what you can do to help!

The Monarch Tagging program will be held Saturday, September 9th at 2:00 PM at Buena Vista County Conservation Park. We will meet at the North Shelter Area. The park is located at 377 440th Street Peterson, IA 51047. Registration is required by Friday, September 8th at 4 PM. Call the conservation office at 712 – 295 -7985 to register.
