Naturalist Lunch Box ~ Turtles ~ July 14th

Naturalist Lunch Box is back for summer 2017! Naturalist Lunch Box is held at 12:00 PM on selected Fridays in the summer at South Cove Park. Pack a lunch and join the fun! Naturalist Lunch Box is designed for all ages. The naturalist will present a short program on a selected topic and have hands on activities for younger audience members.

On Friday, July 14th at 12:00 PM will be the last Naturalist Lunchbox program of the year. The topic for this week is turtles. Boxy, the box turtle, and some of her turtle friends will be there to introduce you to very interesting world of turtles! South Cove Park is located along the south shore of Storm Lake at 125 Stoney Point Road, Storm Lake. If you plan on attending, please let Katie know by Wednesday, July 14th by calling 712-295-7985. This program can be cancelled due to lack of participants.

Snakes of Iowa

The Buena Vista County Conservation Board is hosting an afternoon program on Snakes of Iowa. Snakes are an important part of the ecosystem. Iowa is home to 27 different species. Come to learn all about snake anatomy, diet, habitat and more. Several live snakes will make an appearance!

The Snakes of Iowa program will be held on Saturday, July 22nd at 2:00 in the South Shelter Area. Each program will offer refreshments. If you plan on attending, please let Katie know by Friday, July 21st by calling 712-295-7985. This program can be cancelled due to lack of participants.

Four County Float

Hit the Little Sioux River for a quiet float with friends, family, an archeologist, and four county naturalists.We’ll be floating from Kindlespire Park to Sioux Rapids. 
8:30am-9:00am Refresher on Paddling A River (Not required for participation) 
9:00am-9:30am Registration
9:30am. Introductions & Start of Float
Canoes and kayaks are available for rent, $10/water vessel, due with registration. Float will be cancelled due to inclement weather or poor water conditions. Transportation to vehicles after the float will be provided.
Registration is required by July 31, 2017.
Space is limited.

Birds in the Afternoon

The Buena Vista County Conservation Board is hosting a new program call Birds in the Afternoon. Birds in the Afternoon will feature a different bird species each program. This program is designed for all ages. The month of August’s topic will be the ruby throated hummingbird. Learn tips to attract this bird to your yard including how to make your own nectar and plants for containers and beds.

On Friday, August 11th at 2:00 PM, a program on hummingbirds will be offered at the Buena Vista County Conservation Office. Each program will offer coffee, lemonade, and an assortment of baked goods. If you plan on attending, please let Katie know by Wednesday, August 9th by calling 712-295-7985. This program can be cancelled due to lack of participants.

Monarch Tagging

Join the naturalist to get up close and personal with monarch butterflies. Everyone will get an opportunity to tag a monarch. Tagging monarchs is part of an ongoing research project with the University of Kansas to track migrating monarchs. We will also discuss the decline of monarch butterflies and what you can do to help!

The Monarch Tagging program will be held Saturday, September 9th at 2:00 PM at Buena Vista County Conservation Park. We will meet at the North Shelter Area. The park is located at 377 440th Street Peterson, IA 51047. Registration is required by Friday, September 8th at 4 PM. Call the conservation office at 712-295-7985 to register.
