County offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each Monday through Friday except for legal holidays. (Driver's License hours are from 8:15 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) Holidays observed by county employees are: New Year's Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving, Friday after Thanksgiving, and Christmas Day. State offices (Clerk of District Court and the Department of Human Services) observe the same hours as county offices, but observe Martin Luther King's birthday instead of President's Day.
County and State Offices
The Buena Vista County Courthouse is located at 215 E. 5th St., Storm Lake. County offices currently housed in this building are: Assessor, Auditor, Custodian, Driver's License, Election Commissioner, Engineer, Environmental Health, Law Library, Motor Vehicle Dept., Recorder, Treasurer, Zoning, and State offices of: Clerk of District Court, Small Claims, Magistrate Court, District Court, and Juvenile Court Services. The Department of Human Services is located in the Courthouse Annex at E. 5th and Cayuga St. The CPC Administrator is located at the 728 Erie St, Public Health & Home Care, General Relief, Catholic Charities and Veterans Services Officer, all have offices located at the East Richland Annex at 1709 E. Richland St.; Communications Center, Emergency Management, Jail, and Sheriff are located at the Law Enforcement Center, 411 Expansion Blvd.
The Veterans Service Officer holds office hours from 8:00 - 11:45 a.m. Monday through Friday and 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays or by appointment for other times in the East Richland Annex. The County Attorney Dave Patton maintains his office at 606 Geneseo St., Storm Lake. The Conservation Director (Nate Young), and Naturalist (Katie van der Linden), and Weed Commissioner (Nate Young) are located in the Conservation Office at 377 440th Street, Peterson, Iowa.
Board of Supervisors Meetings
The Board of Supervisors meets on the second secular day of January to organize for the year. The Board also meets in adjourned session every other Tuesday during the year for the purpose of allowing claims, considering matters brought before them, and for the transaction of other business. Special sessions are scheduled as needed. The Auditor is Clerk to the Board and schedules appointments for its meetings.
