The mission of the Division of Tobacco Use Prevention and Control at Iowa Department of Public Health is to establish a comprehensive partnership among state government, local communities, and the people of Iowa to foster a social and legal climate in which tobacco use becomes undesirable and unacceptable. Buena Vista County Public Health and Home Care receives grant funding through Iowa Department of Public Health to further this mission.
Tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death for Iowans, taking the lives of more than 4,400 adults each year. Estimated annual health care costs in Iowa directly related to tobacco use now total $1 billion. The Division of Tobacco Use Prevention and Control works to reduce tobacco use and the toll of tobacco-caused disease and death by preventing youth from starting, helping adults to quit, and preventing exposure to secondhand smoke. Buena Vista County’s Tobacco Prevention program is active in our schools and our community. In our schools, our prevention groups are of high school age and are student led. The groups participate in various tobacco prevention activities throughout the school year. In our communities, we take part in retail surveys and promote smokefree housing. We also promote tobacco cessation with the use of Quitline Iowa (http://www.quitline.org).
